Video: Creating Serverless apps for NASA in GovCloud

Serverless at NASA

In this video from the Columbia AWS Meetup on September 19, 2019, Chris Shenton, CTO at V! Studios, leads a discussion on using serverless at scale to import a large volume of engineering forms at NASA.

NASA’s Office of Extra Vehicular Activity (space walks) has a huge archive of scanned engineering documents they need to make searchable to improve astronaut safety. Chris built a high-volume Optical Character Recognition system which was deployed to their AWS environment using serverless. It was the first use of serverless technology in NASA’s GovCloud, and has demonstrated excellent scalability and cost savings.

Chris presents how serverless architectures differ from conventional designs and how he leveraged S3 events to trigger processing by Lambda at scale.
